Picked up this 2000 Volvo S70 5spd for $750 a few days ago. Judging by the truly heroic number of good, roadworthy cars listed on the various interweb marketplaces for less than $1k these days, I say now is the best time to buy a cheap used car since before Cash 4 Clunkers.

The Volvo has 299k on the clock, a stock of service records three inches thick, and a timing belt that will be changed by me soon. It’s in remarkably good shape for an 18 year old Swede that’s gone to the Moon and is on its way back. All the electrics work, no fluid leaks, even the A/C blows cold! Quiet as a whisper, too. Oh, and it’s still running the original clutch .

That is the cleanest sub-$1k car I have ever seen.

It’s just as clean underneath, too . There is zero rust anywhere.

Thank you! I’ve done some extensive research on these cars and it seems that as long as it’s got a good timing belt, regularly changed oil, and a clear PCV system, it’ll run forever.

These are great cars, and that's a nice price.

Volvo was once very 19th century in how they built cars. Built with an indefinite service life in mind.

It’s crazy right? When I was 18, I couldn’t find a car that ran and drove good enough to make it back home for under $1000.

I searched for a few months before I finally found a $700 XJ that had been T-Boned on one side, causing it to spin around and slam into a telephone pole on the other side. I had to find 2 new rims before I could even drive it home. Then I replaced the shattered rear window, drove it for 3 years and sold it for $1500 (with 2 smashed quarter panels, and a busted fiberglass hatch that had to be kept closed with a bungee cord).

Today there are plenty of decent looking cars to choose from for less than that.

Wow it’s beautiful. I’ve got a little penchant for the 90s and early 2000s Swedish Stuff right now so maybe I’ll be taking another look at  Craigslist this afternoon...

Cconsidering I picked up a 97 Dakota4x4 club cab two weeks ago for $800 I'd say now's a great time to buy a beater.
